Introduction to Film Study and Production - 12964 - FST 500 - 001 |
---|
All students are expected to attend and participate in person at the assigned day/time. (F2F) The Critical Studies component of the graduate gateway course is designed as a primary introduction to Film Studies. The objective of the class is not to serve as a survey on all aspects of film studies but to provide an inaugural framework. I hope that this course will enable you dually: to become informed film/media makers and to critically approach film/media. The Critical Studies component is divided into three parts: (i) Formal Components of Film Language and Style (ii) Filmic Forms and Modes and (iii) Classifying Film Studies. Each part constitutes four classes. The first part “Formal Components of Film Language and Style,” will engage with the fundamental component of film, the shot, via mise-en-scène and cinematography. We will then look at the relationship between shots in terms of editing and conclude by exploring sound. The second part, “Filmic Forms and Modes,” will lay out how different cinematic modes – narrative, documentary, experimental, and animation – serve as organizational structures that tell stories, represent the real, and challenge traditional forms. The third part, “Classifying Film Studies,” explores how the discipline of film studies has historically organized its pedagogy through the classificatory categories of auteur, genre, nation, and identity/ideology.
